Retro Circles - The Tutorial

After many requests I’ve decided to post a tutorial for the square used in the Retro Circles Blanket

I’m calling this a ‘tutorial’ rather than a pattern as I’m not re-inventing the wheel. Although I didn’t work from a pre-existing pattern when making my blanket I know there are many ‘circle in a square’ patterns out there. One from Little Tin Bird that is very similar to what I had done, so I would hate anyone to think that I’m claiming their pattern as my own.
So! Here goes...

Abbreviations:
US crochet terms
SS- Slip stitch
SC- Single crochet
HDC- Half-double crochet
DC- Double crochet
TC- Treble crochet
Ch- Chain

Select the hook that works well with the yarn you have.  I used a 4.5mm hook and dk weight yarn, I crochet quite tight so would probably choose a 4mm with dk if you don’t.

Note: Rounds 2-4 worked entirely in the BACK LOOP ONLY.

Round 1: Start with a magic circle and chain 3 (counts as first DC), 11 more DC into the circle, tighten circle. Join with a SS into the 3rd chain in your original chain 3. Remember to join only in the back loop (12 DC)

Alternatively, if you’re not sure how to do a magic circle you can chain 4, join to make a ring. Ch3, 11 DC into ring. (This will just leave a little hole in the middle of your first round.)

Round 2: Chain 3, DC into same loop. Two DC in EACH of the following back loops until end of round. Join with SS in chain 3 (24 DC)

Round 3: Chain 3, DC into same stitch. *DC in back loop. 2 DC in next back loop. Repeat from * around. End with DC in last back loop and join with SS in chain 3 (36 DC)

Round 4: Chain 3, DC into same loop. * DC in the next two back loops, 2 DC in next. Repeat from * around. End with DC in last two back loops and join with SS in chain 3 (48 DC)

Fasten off if you want to join a new colour for the ‘square’
Join new colour.

You’re now starting on the square border around the circle. For this round you will be working through BOTH loops.

Round 5: Chain 1, SC in next two, HDC in next two, DC in next two (TC, TC, chain 3, TC, TC) all in next stitch (this is your first corner), *DC, DC, HDC, HDC, SC, SC, SC, HDC, HDC, DC, DC, (TC,TC, ch3, TC, TC) in next. Repeat from *2 more times. DC, DC, HDC, HDC join to chain 1 with SS. Fasten off.

There you are, you've made your first square!

Now make lots more. My cot sized blanket was made up of 63 squares (7 wide x 9 long). You can find a tutorial on joining the squares with single crochet at Attic24

  2. I'm doing a similar blanket right now (three rounds to the circle though) with grey borders. I'm using scrap yarn for the most part though, so mine will be more random. I love the colors you used in your blanket!

    1. I keep getting stuck on the second round, whenever I try and crochet into the back loop it pulls loose and leaves a big gap. Am I missing something or am I just pulling too hard? Thank you!

    2. Hi Katherine, is it when your joining at the end of round one and making the ch3 dc in that join for the start of round 2? If its at that point I'd join through both loops then start working through the back loops for the rest of the round. This will make the join a little tighter.
If I've misunderstood let me know and I'll try to figure out what's going wrong

    3. I keep getting stuck on round three. Just to verify, It's chain three. DC in the same stitch. Then after that step I am confused. Am I supposed to do 2 DC in the next stitch and then 1 DC in the next then 2 DC in the next two and repeat? Or do chain three 1 DC in the same stitch, 1 DC in the next stitch, 2 DC in the next two stitches, and repeat? I have tried it both ways and I never end up with 36 DC.

    4. Hi, round 3 is 2dc in first stitch, 1 in the next repeated. So to start the round ch3, 1dc in same stitch (counts as 2dc), 1 dc in next, 2dc in next.. Repeated and ending with 1dc in the last stitch before joining. Round 4 will be the same but with two single dc in between the 2dc in one stitch. Hope this helps, if not let me know & I'll try to figure out what's going on.

    6. Round 5 only adds up to 47 stitches. What do I do with the last stitch?

    7. Hmm. Are you including your first ch1 as a stitch? That should be counted as an sc so you can slip stitch to join in your ch1. You should have four sides of dc,dc,hdc, hdc,sc,sc,sc,hdc, hdc,dc,dc and the corner (tc,tc ch2,tc,tc) in the next making 12 each side.

    1. Hi Debra, I used 13x 50g balls, each ball was 116m. 2x each colour and 5x cream. 1 ball of yarn made 8 circles. Hope that helps :)

    1. It seems like the mustard/yellow may be discontinued as I can't find it either. I've dug up my order invoice and the numbers I have are:
      Mustard - 106
      Clipper (darker blue) - 15
Water (lighter blue) - no number was listed on the invoice but I'd say it's probably 343
      Biscuit - no number listed
      Alabaster - 03
I'll try to source some replacement yarns that are similar :)

    1. Hi Laura, for this blanket I just worked a simple border. I believe it was two rounds of HDC, 1 round sc, 2 rounds HDC. I've used a crab stitch border before too. Hope you're going well with your blanket,
      Adele

    1. hi, I believe they were about 11cm square. but it would be best to make up a sample one with the yarn weight & hook your planning to use and measure off that for your larger blanket. 'One Day' I'll make a large one too... one day lol

  22. Did you block your work when you were done??

    1. Yes, only the finished blanket, I didn't block the squares prior to sewing together.

  24. Hi Adele...I love the look of this afghan! I started the circles and just had a quick question for you. On the fourth round I end up with 2 extra stitches at the end, which would give me a total of 50 stitches. Does "DC in the next two back loops" mean that I need to skip the first 2 stitches after the chain 3 and the DC in the beginning? Thanks! Amanda

  25. This is a beautiful afghan! I am currently working on my own version and my friends can't stop admiring it. Thank you for this wonderful pattern.

  26. I love this! I have attempted to make it but my circles keep curling. I changed hook sizes but they still curl. Am i doing something wrong?

  27. I pinned your tutorial a while back, but came across it again lately. I'm making an afghan for my sister and I've started the crazy thing about 10 times, then I found your tutorial. I'm not going to be restarting this thing again! Love it! Do you have an good suggestions on blocking a piece this big? I've honestly never blocked any of my pieces, but probably should with this one.

  28. This blanket is adorable! I recently found out I'm pregnant with #3 and my first two each have their crocheted blankies. I was nervous about making this one as I wanted to try something a little different, but this pattern is SO simple and looks great! I'm doing mine with deep red and brown circles in cream squares. Excited for how it turns out! Thanks for the tutorial!

  29. The link for joining the squares doesn't look like your joined squares. Any tips on how you joined your squares? Much appreciated thank you. :)

  31. Hi, I love this pattern! I'm actually using it to make one square as a throw pillow cover. My question is, I have 10 rounds of circle(increases and all, totaling 144 stitches/dc[if I'm counting correctly; I'm very sleepy lol]) Now, I'm stuck trying to figure out how to square it out. Do you have any idea how many hdc/sc/etc. I'll be doing for each side? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
